It's time, Trekkies! After years of rumors and speculation, we finally get our Starfleet Academy series and the latest news from São Paulo really makes us want more.
The start date is fixed
The series starts on January 15 with two episodes on Paramount+ also with us in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Perfect timing for a cozy winter binge, right? Thereafter, there will be new episodes on a weekly basis until the grand finale on 12 March 2026.
Paul Giamatti as a villain? Shut up and take my money!
On the CCXP in Brazil has Paul Giamatti This is an exclusive clip from the series. And what can I say: Giamatti plays the character Nus Braka, a mixture of Klingon and Tellarit, who seems to have it right in him. In the clip shown, his character attacks the U.S.S. Athena, exactly the spacecraft that also serves as the Starfleet Academy campus. Yes, you heard correctly: The cadets learn almost in space!
“At Starfleet Academy, YOU decide if they define you. It’s time to build the future. I would be honored for you to join us.”
-Nahla Ake, Chancellor of Starfleet Academy
What is it really about?
The story takes place in the 32nd century, in the same distant future as Star Trek: Discovery. After a catastrophic event called ‘The Burn’, which has shaken the Federation quite a bit, we are now witnessing the first new cadet class in over 100 years.
This is not just about photon torpedoes and warp drives. The series promises a mix of classic coming-of-age themes such as friendships, first loves, rivalries and, of course, a new threat to the entire Federation. Here's what Star Trek does best: Combine character development with galactic conflict.
The cast can also be seen
Oscar winner Holly Hunter plays the chancellor of the Starfleet Academy and also captain of the U.S.S. Athena. In addition to Giamatti, a few familiar faces also return: Tig Notaro as Jett Reno and Robert Picardo as the Doctor from Voyager. And yes, WWE star Becky Lynch has a gig too!
The young cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard and Zoë Steiner. A colorful troupe of people, Klingons, Betazoids and even a hologram.
My honest opinion
I admit: The trailer hasn't knocked me off the stool yet. These "high school in space" vibes could either work brilliantly or go pretty wrong. But hey, with this cast and the fact that the series has already been extended for a second season, Paramount+ seems pretty confident.
And let's be honest: After the success of Strange New Worlds and the emotional finale of Discovery, we need a breath of fresh air in the Star Trek universe. A new generation of officers learning what it means to be part of Starfleet? This could be just the right approach.
What do you think?
Are you as excited as I am? Or are you concerned that the series is drifting too much towards ‘teen drama’? We'll see soon. It is not long until 15 January. Time to look at Discovery again and prepare for the future of the Federation. Live long and prosper! ⁇
